Owen's first week

Owen has been home for just over a week now, and we are all doing very well.  The labor was long and with some bumps along the way, with 12 hours at the birth center (mostly in the tub, which was awesome) before the little guy got stuck and we transferred to the hospital.  A few more hours of hard work for all of us at the hospital, and he was finally born, at 1:47pm October 24th, his due date.  Dad has been home all week and has been a huge help, it will be sad for Mom and Owen when he goes back to work on Monday.  Surely Mom cannot do as good a job burping Owen, and Owen also loves sleeping on Dad whenever possible.  Owen LOVES to eat, to be held close and to gaze up at us in his drunken monkey state of being after eating.  He was 3.520 kilos (7 pounds, 12 ounces) and 50 cm long (20 inches) at birth and at his pediatrician visit today he weighed 3.580 (7 pounds, 14 ounces) and his head grew in circumference a whole 2 cm, we think from going from cone shaped to round.  Mom is learning to sleep in 2 hour increments and also to trust that she doesn't have to stay awake and watch Owen sleep at night, so she is feeling much better.  All in all the first week has gone great, and here are some of the many photos we've shot around the house this week as we've become acquainted with our new little man.

First outfit at the hospital.

Sleeping on me during our one night hospital stay.

Cozy in Great-Grandma Grace's blanket.

Nick attempting to imprint.

Our little garden gnome.

Yes, we gave him a pacifier on Day 2.  No, it did not affect his nursing and he will not even accept it anymore!

He aggressively sucks on anything anywhere near his mouth.  This was before milk came in, poor guy was hungry!

Love his faces.

Best drunken monkey face.  He opens his eyes WIDE and makes fish faces with his mouth when he's drunk on milk.

Staring up at one of Daddy's flies.

Meeting Auntie Olga.  Her baby will be here soon too!

First outing in the wrap.

Owen meets our doula, Monika.

Midwife Gabriela weighs him with a fishing scale!  Back at birth weight 6 days later.

Daddy getting Owen ready for his first bath at home.

Midwife Gabriela visited us every day after the birth to check on us.

We love the sleep sacks because they're so easy, but he looks so cute with legs!

  1. Oh how wonderful!! Congrats guys!!
I can't get over how much hair he has-- I'm pretty sure he'd win a competition between him and Evelyn (3 years old in Feb) and well, Cora (2 months) would classify as bald, for sure!!
Brendon and I love the pic with the fly reel! WOOO!!
    Oh gosh. Yay babies.
    Congrats! Way to go Vyletas!!
